Universidade Católica do Porto challenged Mojobrands to develop signage that was more than just functional. On a campus that welcomes a large number of international students, the signage needed to be bilingual, easy to interpret visually, intuitive to read and, simultaneously, promote values such as sustainability.
Our mission was to develop signage that balanced three fundamental pillars: functionality, accessibility and graphic alignment with the visual identity of Universidade Católica do Porto. The proposal should also reflect the institution’s values and encourage students to make more conscious choices in their daily lives.
We began the project with a complete immersion in the campus, studying circulation flows, student interaction points and listening to the specific challenges presented by the university’s internal team. It was essential to understand the routines and decision-making moments of those who live in the space on a daily basis.
The inspiration for the design came from the Universidade Católica logo itself. The circular shape became the basis of the visual elements. To reinforce the idea of clear and universal communication, we incorporated the shape of a speech bubble, transforming the signage into a ‘dialogue’ between the space and the users.
Clarity and Functionality:
The icons and messages stood out for their simplicity and impact, and for their ease of reading and interpretation.
Accessibility:
The bilingual signage made the campus more inclusive and welcoming for international students.
Sustainability:
The visual communication helped reinforce sustainable behaviour among the academic community.
